Teens are facing more stressors now than ever before, and have more negative methods of copping.
School can be stressful, for both parents and their kids. Many changes are going on in their life an, how an individual accepts change determines if they can adapt successfully to stress.”According to the American Psychological Association, 77% of people state that they regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress; & 73% of people state that they regularly experience psychological symptoms caused by stress.” That’s a lot of people stressed out.The most common definition of Stress is a “physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension,” but it looks different for everyone. The most important thing is, how you deal with stress.
According to the American Psychological Association, almost a third of teens said they weren’t sure if they were doing enough to manage stress.
We at Family Education Initiative believe that the most effective method is being proactive in teaching our teens how to accept and cope with stress through life coaching best practices. So how do our kids deal with the stressors of everyday life? Well, If not taught correctly there stress can turn into negative behaviors such as substance abuse disorder, violence, anxiety, bullying, and other societal issues that are currently plaguing our school system.
However, don’t worry, there are warning signs to tell if your teen is under an abnormal amount of stress. For some stress can manifest one or a combination of these symptoms such as fatigue, stomach aches, headaches, and other physical symptoms, and for others, it causes irritability, anger, nervousness, or lack of energy (American Psychological Association).
The good news is that there are ways to ameliorate stress. Try talking to your teen about practicing mindfulness, which is, “a method of using meditation and breathing exercises to raise awareness and reduce stress.” In this technological age people are attached to screens, try the stress relieving mindfulness application “Headspace” for some self care.
Better yet, go outside, and experience nature! Spend some time on a walk or around some foliage to immediately lower blood pressure and relieve stress.
